So what's wrong with patio heaters?

The problem is there aren't any walls outside*. So when you turn a patio heater on, most of the heat disappears straight away. This is not like the heating in your home, where there are walls and a roof to keep it in. For a patio heater to keep you even a little bit warm it takes a lot of energy - really a lot.

And where does that energy come from? A gas canister. And when you burn gas it makes a direct contribution to climate change.

Climate change is a big problem. By using a patio heater you're making it worse. Lots of things contribute to climate change - cars for instance. But at least a car is useful. A patio heater is so wasteful and so totally unnecessary, and we all managed without them perfectly happily til - oh - about five years ago. So don't buy one.

Plus, patio heaters are crap. If you stand near one, you're not toasty warm, you're just far too hot from standing near intense streams of burning gas. You get worried that your hair is going to catch fire. And if you stand a bit away you can't feel anything: you're just stood there freezing your arse off and feeling jealous of the people whose hair is about to burn.

*This is kind of the definition of outside
